Edmonton is the capital of Alberta, and the province's second-largest city. Edmonton is located on the North Saskatchewan River near the geographic centre of the province, at an elevation of 668 metres (2,192 ft). Edmonton is the most northerly city in North America with a population of over 1,000,000. It is surrounded by land that is flat to gently rolling, with ravines and deep river valleys. The Canadian Rockies are roughly 220 km (140 mi) to the southwest.
